Junior Review and Senior InstituteAt the end of junior year, Fenway students must demonstrate that they are ready to face the challenges of Senior Institute. Junior Review All students prepare a
portfolio of the best work they have done in each of their courses in their
preceding three years. They also create a resumé, and write an essay on their
strengths and weaknesses, hopes for the future, and plans to make the most out
of senior year. One at a time, at an offsite location, juniors present their
portfolios to a panel of the teachers in their House. Adult family members and
outside advisors are encouraged to attend as well. During this rite of passage,
known as Junior Review, each student must prove his/her abilities in the major
content areas, as well as demonstrate intellectual and social readiness for the
challenging senior year. The adult panel comments on the student’s
presentation, and discusses with the student what supports and/or challenges
s/he will need going forward. Senior Institute Senior Institute is the final
stage for Fenway students and may last one or two years, depending on
recommendations made at Junior Review. In preparation for entering the “real
world” of college or work, students in the three Houses are mixed together
into new cohorts (A, B and C) and study with a new set of teachers in math,
science and humanities. They remain in their House advisories, however, so that
they are among old friends and can support each other as they write their senior
position paper, complete their senior portfolios in math, science and
humanities, and go through the laborious college application process. At the
beginning of April, they all leave school to go out on their senior internships.
When they return in May, they complete any outstanding work required for
graduation. |
